Goodbye to Summer: Sewing Inspiration for Fall
As the seasons shift, I find myself ready to trade the lightness of summer sewing for the warmth and coziness of fall projects. Autumn brings color, texture, and meaning to the home, and it’s the perfect time to stitch pieces that carry us into the festivals and the cooler months ahead.
Here are four projects—on each week for a month— that blend seasonal décor with Messianic inspiration — a harvest table runner, block-printed tea towels, quilted pillows, and a market tote. Each one can be made with fabrics from your stash or the upcoming TrueWoven fall collection.
🍇 Project 1: Festival of Ingathering Tea Towels (Block-Printed Edition)
Fall is the season of Sukkot, the Festival of Ingathering, and these block-printed tea towels are my nod to the harvest. Using hand-carved linoleum stamps, I press motifs of grapes, pomegranates, and wheat onto simple flour sack towels.
Each towel carries the charm of handmade artistry — no two prints are alike. They’re useful in the kitchen, beautiful as wall art, and they make thoughtful hostess gifts during the feast season. A band of patterned TrueWoven fabric stitched at the hem finishes the look.
What’s coming up…
🍇 Project: Harvest Table Runner with Scripture Embroidery
Nothing sets a table like a handmade runner. For fall, I’m stitching one with a fluted hem, appliquéd pomegranates, and Psalm 34:8 — “Taste and see that the Lord is good.”
This piece ties together autumn abundance with Scripture, making it a meaningful addition to both everyday meals and festival gatherings. Layer it over a neutral linen cloth, add candlesticks and a bowl of figs, and your table will feel both festive and rooted.
🍂 Project: Cozy Quilted Pillow Covers
As the evenings turn cool, I bring out layers of texture — quilts, throws, and pillows. This project is a chance to stitch quilted pillow covers in autumnal fabrics.
You can piece them from scraps in maple leaf or log cabin patterns, or quilt whole-cloth designs with acorns and vines. The removable envelope backs make them practical for washing, and the results instantly cozy up your living spaces.
🍎 Project : Autumn Market Tote
Fall means apples, pumpkins, and market days — and you’ll need a bag to carry it all. This lined, reinforced tote is sturdy enough for produce and pretty enough to double as décor when it’s hanging by the door.
Canvas or linen on the outside, a bold TrueWoven print on the inside, and reinforced handles make this bag both functional and beautiful. It’s also perfect for carrying bread and fruit to Shabbat or Sukkot meals.
Wrapping Up
Each of these projects is designed to help you say goodbye to summer with intention and welcome the richness of fall — in your home, at your table, and in your faith walk.
Stay tuned: I’ll be sharing step-by-step tutorials for each project, along with the new TrueWoven fabrics designed especially for them.
So thread your machine, gather your fabrics, and let’s stitch the season of abundance together. 🍂
