Tiny Homestead Habit: Keep Herbs Near the Kitchen Door

Tiny homesteads aren’t built in a single weekend project. They grow slowly through small, faithful habits—watering a pot of herbs, feeding a sourdough starter, hanging laundry in the morning sun. In this series, I’m sharing the tiny homestead habits that bring life, rhythm, and nourishment to an ordinary home.

One of the simplest homestead habits is also one of the most useful: keep a small pot of herbs close to the kitchen.

When herbs grow near the door, you begin to use them without thinking about it. A sprig of thyme in soup, a handful of chives over eggs, a few leaves of basil tucked into a sandwich. Instead of dried herbs from a jar, you have fresh flavor within reach.

The pot doesn’t have to be large. A simple container of thyme, oregano, or chives is enough to begin. Place it where you will see it every day—near the kitchen door, on a patio table, or even on a sunny windowsill.

This tiny habit quietly changes the way you cook. Meals become fresher, flavors brighter, and the kitchen begins to feel a little more connected to the garden.

Homesteading often begins with something very small. Sometimes it begins with a single pot of herbs.
